🚇Choosing Your Daily Commute
- If a city has a good metro/rail system, it almost always beats ride-hailing for speed and cost during rush hours.
- Check if a monthly transit pass exists — in most cities it pays for itself within 2 weeks.
- In Southeast Asia, a rented scooter is often the most practical and cheapest daily transport.
📱Ride-Hailing Smart
- Always download multiple ride-hail apps — prices vary 20-40% between Uber, Bolt, DiDi, Grab, etc.
- In Latin America, InDrive lets you set your own price — great for regular routes you know well.
- Check if Uber operates before arriving — it is banned or restricted in Barcelona, Budapest, and parts of Bali.
💰Saving on Transport
- Buy a transit card on day one (Suica, Oyster, Rabbit, SUBE, T-money) — saves time and often gives discounts.
- Bike-share programs are hugely underrated: free in Medellin, €4/month in Seoul, €50/year in Barcelona.
- Night transport gaps (midnight-5 AM) exist in most cities — plan ahead or budget for occasional taxi rides.
🛡️Safety & Comfort
- In developing countries, always use ride-hail apps over street-hailed taxis — GPS tracking adds safety.
- Research airport transfer options before landing — airport taxis are 2-5x more expensive everywhere.
- Google Maps transit directions work well in most nomad cities; download offline maps as backup.
Regionale Verkehrsübersicht
Southeast Asia
Scooter culture dominates. Grab is the super-app for ride-hailing across the region. Public transit varies wildly — excellent in Bangkok/KL, nearly absent in Bali.
Transport is extremely affordable. Budget €30-60/month for scooter rental or €50-100/month if relying solely on Grab rides.
Wear a helmet when riding scooters (mandatory by law in most countries). Grab/Gojek are safer than street taxis.
Europe
Public transit is generally world-class. Monthly passes are the way to go. Cycling infrastructure is excellent in Berlin, Barcelona, and Budapest.
Monthly transit passes range from €30 (Budapest) to €49 (Berlin Deutschland-Ticket) to €42 (Barcelona). Ride-hailing is pricier than Asia/LatAm.
Public transit is very safe across all listed European cities. Beware of pickpockets on crowded metro lines in Barcelona and Lisbon.
Latin America
Metro systems are extremely affordable. Ride-hailing (Uber/DiDi/InDrive) is cheap and widely available. Many cities have good bike-share programs.
Some of the cheapest public transit in the world — Mexico City metro is €0.15/ride, Buenos Aires Subte ~€0.10. Monthly transport budget: €20-50.
Use ride-hail apps over street taxis. In Mexico and Colombia, avoid hailing cabs on the street — always use apps.
Middle East & Caucasus
Istanbul has excellent integrated transit. Tbilisi relies more on ride-hailing but is extremely affordable. Both cities are improving rapidly.
Very affordable in both cities. Tbilisi averages €1-3 per Bolt ride. Istanbul transit is ~€0.40/ride with transfer discounts.
Both cities are safe for transit users. Istanbul ferries are a highlight. In Tbilisi, Bolt is more reliable than hailing from the street.
East Asia
World-class rail systems in both Tokyo and Seoul. IC cards (Suica/T-money) are essential. Ride-hailing exists but taxis/trains are the norm.
Rail fares are higher than developing regions but still reasonable. Tokyo commuter passes offer big savings. Seoul bike-share is just €4/month.
Transit systems are exceptionally safe in both cities. The biggest risk is getting lost in Tokyo station — use Google Maps.
Africa
Cape Town is primarily a ride-hail city. MyCiTi BRT is reliable for limited routes. Most nomads rely on Uber/Bolt for daily transport.
Uber/Bolt rides are affordable by Western standards. Budget €100-150/month for ride-hailing. MyCiTi monthly pass is ~€25.
Stick to Uber/Bolt rather than minibus taxis. Avoid walking alone in isolated areas at night. MyCiTi bus routes are safe.
South Asia
Goa has minimal public transit — scooter rental is practically required. Ola and Uber are available but coverage is patchy outside main areas.
Ultra-cheap if you rent a scooter (~€50-70/month). Ride-hailing trips cost €1-3. Budget €50-100/month total for transport.
Road conditions can be challenging. Always wear a helmet. Use ride-hail apps for safety over auto-rickshaws, especially at night.
