Consejos de seguros para nómadas digitales

🎯 Choosing the Right Plan

  • Travel medical is fine for healthy nomads under 40 on shorter trips (up to 1 year)
  • Get full health insurance if you have pre-existing conditions or plan to stay abroad long-term
  • Check if your home country health insurance remains valid abroad — many do not cover you after 30-90 days
  • Consider your worst-case scenario: emergency surgery abroad can cost €50,000-200,000+
  • Read the policy exclusions carefully — the cheapest plan might not cover what matters most to you

Coverage Must-Haves

  • Emergency medical evacuation (€100,000+ minimum for Asia/Latin America)
  • COVID-19 treatment coverage (still required by some countries)
  • Repatriation of remains (morbid but essential)
  • Hospital direct billing — avoid paying €10,000+ upfront and claiming back
  • 24/7 emergency assistance hotline in your language

💰 Saving Money

  • Higher deductibles significantly lower monthly premiums
  • Exclude USA coverage if you are not visiting — it can halve your premium
  • Annual plans are usually 15-20% cheaper than monthly
  • Some countries (Thailand, Mexico) have affordable local insurance as a supplement
  • Use credit card travel insurance for short trips and nomad insurance for long-term

🚨 Claims & Emergencies

  • Save all receipts, medical reports, and doctor notes — take photos immediately
  • Contact your insurer BEFORE non-emergency treatment when possible
  • Know your policy number and emergency hotline before you need them
  • File claims within the required timeframe (usually 30-90 days)
  • Use the insurer app to find in-network hospitals and avoid out-of-pocket payments

💻 Digital Nomad Specifics

  • Laptop insurance is separate from medical — check if your provider includes it or add a gadget rider
  • Mental health coverage is increasingly important — not all travel medical plans include it
  • If you are applying for a digital nomad visa, check if the plan meets the country minimum coverage requirements
  • Some Schengen countries require proof of insurance with €30,000+ medical coverage
  • Consider travel insurance for short trips and health insurance for your base country

Consejos de seguros por región

Southeast Asia

General: Private hospitals in Bangkok and KL are world-class but expensive without insurance. Budget hospital stays can still cost €500-2000/day.
Cobertura: Ensure your plan covers motorbike accidents (common exclusion) and tropical diseases. Direct billing at Bumrungrad, Mount Elizabeth, etc.
Coste: Travel medical is sufficient for most nomads. Local Thai insurance (LUMA) can supplement at €20-40/month.

Europe

General: Schengen visa requires €30,000+ medical coverage. Public healthcare is available in many EU countries but EHIC/GHIC only covers EU citizens.
Cobertura: EU-based insurers (Genki, Ekta) are often cheaper for Europe coverage. Check if your plan qualifies for visa applications.
Coste: Excluding USA from your coverage area can save 30-50% on premiums when staying in Europe.

Latin America

General: Healthcare quality varies greatly by country and city. Private hospitals in Mexico City and Buenos Aires are excellent. Rural areas have limited facilities.
Cobertura: Ensure emergency medical evacuation coverage is at least €100,000 — you may need air evacuation to a major city or back home.
Coste: Local supplementary insurance in Mexico (IMSS, €30/month) or Colombia (EPS) can provide affordable day-to-day coverage.

Middle East & Caucasus

General: Dubai and Istanbul have excellent private healthcare. Georgia has affordable clinics but limited English-speaking facilities outside Tbilisi.
Cobertura: Dubai freelance visas require specific insurance — check if your nomad plan qualifies or if you need a UAE-licensed policy.
Coste: Georgia and Turkey are very affordable for out-of-pocket minor treatments. Save insurance for emergencies.

East Asia

General: Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have world-class healthcare. Japan requires national health insurance for residents (including some visa types).
Cobertura: Language barriers can be an issue in hospitals. Choose a plan with 24/7 assistance that provides translation services.
Coste: Japan NHI costs ~€200/month but covers 70% of all treatment. Consider it if staying 3+ months on an eligible visa.

Africa

General: Private healthcare in Cape Town and Johannesburg is good. Outside major cities, medical facilities can be very limited.
Cobertura: Emergency medical evacuation is critical in Africa — ensure minimum €200,000 coverage for air evacuation.
Coste: South Africa has affordable private insurance (Discovery Health, ~€100/month) for residents on valid visas.

South Asia

General: India has excellent private hospitals in major cities at fraction of Western costs, but quality varies dramatically. Goa has limited facilities for serious issues.
Cobertura: Tropical disease coverage is essential. Ensure dengue, typhoid, and food poisoning treatment are not excluded.
Coste: Minor treatments in India are so cheap (€5-20 for a doctor visit) that you may not need to claim. Save insurance for hospitalization.
