Regional Dining Tips
Southeast Asia
Street food is king here — fresh, cheap, and often better than restaurants. Look for stalls with high turnover.
You can eat 3 excellent meals for under €5/day across most of SEA. Markets and food courts are your best friends.
Stick to cooked-to-order stalls, avoid pre-made food sitting out, and always have bottled water.
Europe
Lunch set menus (menu del dia, menu du jour) offer the best value. Markets and food halls are great for variety.
Groceries from supermarkets like Lidl/Aldi can cut food costs significantly. Cooking a few meals at home saves €200+/month.
Food safety standards are high across Europe. Tap water is safe in most Western and Central European cities.
Latin America
Lunch is the main meal — "menu del dia" or "almuerzo" is a multi-course set lunch at a fraction of dinner prices.
Street tacos, empanadas, and set lunches keep daily food costs under €10 easily. Markets are cheaper than supermarkets.
Bottled water is recommended in Mexico. In Argentina and Colombia, tap water in major cities is generally safe.
East Asia
Convenience stores in Japan and Korea serve surprisingly high-quality food. Food quality is exceptional across the region.
Lunch sets, conveyor belt sushi, and convenience store meals keep Japan affordable. Korea's banchan (free side dishes) are generous.
Food hygiene standards are among the highest in the world. Tap water is safe in Japan and South Korea.
Middle East & Caucasus
Georgian food is one of the world's best-kept secrets. Turkish breakfast culture is an experience not to miss.
Georgia offers some of the cheapest dining in all of Eurasia. Istanbul is very affordable outside tourist areas.
Food safety is generally good. Drink bottled water in Turkey, tap water is fine in central Tbilisi.
Africa
Cape Town has a world-class food scene blending African, Malay, Indian, and European influences.
Braai is the social heart of South African food culture — join one if invited. Woolworths has excellent prepared foods.
Tap water is safe in Cape Town. Always tip 10-15% at restaurants — staff depend on it.
South Asia
Indian food is incredibly diverse. Goa blends Portuguese and Indian cuisines uniquely. Thali meals are the best value.
You can eat very well on €3-5/day in India. Local dhabas (roadside restaurants) and thalis offer amazing value.
Stick to bottled water, avoid raw salads at cheap places, and choose busy restaurants. Cooked food is generally safe.
Prices are approximate averages in EUR for comparison. Actual costs vary by location, season, and exchange rates. WildNomads provides this guide for planning purposes only.
