Region Tips
Southeast Asia
Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore
Plug types vary widely. Thailand often accepts US plugs. Malaysia and Singapore use UK plugs. Carry a universal adapter. Voltage is 220-240V — check hair dryers and older electronics.
East Asia
Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China
Japan and Taiwan use US-style plugs at lower voltage (100-110V). South Korea uses European round pins. China has multi-standard outlets in hotels.
Europe
Portugal, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, UK, Netherlands, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Montenegro
Most of continental Europe uses Type C/F. UK uses Type G. Italy also uses Type L. Switzerland uses Type J. One good European adapter covers most countries. 230V/50Hz is standard.
South Asia
India, Nepal, Sri Lanka
Type D (large round pins) is most common. Power fluctuations and outages are frequent. Always use a surge protector. Carry a power bank for scheduled load shedding.
Latin America
Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, Ecuador
Most countries use US-style Type A/B. Brazil is the exception with Type N. Argentina uses Type I. Voltage varies: 110-127V in Mexico/Colombia/Costa Rica, 220V in Argentina/Chile/Peru.
Africa
South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, Egypt
Varies widely. South Africa has unique Type M/N. Kenya uses UK Type G. Morocco and Egypt use European Type C/E/F. South Africa has scheduled power cuts (load shedding) — bring a UPS.
Middle East & Caucasus
Turkey, Georgia, UAE
Turkey and Georgia use European Type C/F. UAE uses UK Type G but many outlets also accept European plugs. Hotels typically have universal outlets.
Oceania
Australia, New Zealand
Type I (angled flat pins) throughout the region. 230V/50Hz. Very stable power grid. Adapters widely available at airports.
Electrical standards may vary within countries and can change. Always verify plug types and voltage at your accommodation. When in doubt, use a universal travel adapter with built-in surge protection.
