Regional Safety Overview
Southeast Asia
General Safety
Generally very safe for tourists. Main risks are petty theft, motorbike accidents, and tourist-targeted scams. The heat itself is often the biggest safety concern.
Scam Awareness
Tourist scams are common but rarely dangerous. Use ride-hailing apps (Grab, Gojek), be skeptical of unsolicited advice from strangers, and always agree on prices before services.
Health & Precautions
Never drink tap water. Use strong sunscreen and stay hydrated. Dengue fever risk exists — use mosquito repellent, especially at dawn and dusk.
Europe
General Safety
Among the safest regions for digital nomads. Violent crime is rare. The main concern is pickpocketing in tourist-heavy cities, especially on public transport and at popular attractions.
Scam Awareness
Pickpocketing is organized and professional in cities like Barcelona, Rome, and Paris. Use anti-theft bags, keep wallets in front pockets, and stay alert on crowded transit.
Health & Precautions
Tap water is safe in most EU countries. Healthcare is accessible but carry EHIC/GHIC or travel insurance. UV exposure is often underestimated in Southern Europe.
Latin America
General Safety
Requires more street awareness than Europe/Asia. Stick to recommended neighborhoods, use ride-hailing apps, and avoid displaying wealth. Most nomad-popular areas are quite safe with basic precautions.
Scam Awareness
Express kidnapping and phone snatching are the most serious risks. Never use street taxis, and keep a "decoy" wallet with small cash. Learn basic Spanish for emergencies.
Health & Precautions
Tap water safety varies by city — default to bottled. Altitude sickness in cities like Mexico City and Bogota. Dengue and Zika exist in tropical areas.
Middle East & Caucasus
General Safety
Georgia is exceptionally safe. Turkey is generally safe in tourist areas but has higher earthquake risk. Both have welcoming cultures but more conservative social norms than Western Europe.
Scam Awareness
Taxi scams are common — always use apps. Istanbul has more tourist-targeted scams; Tbilisi has very few. Bargaining is expected at markets in both countries.
Health & Precautions
Tap water is safe in Tbilisi, not recommended in Istanbul. Both countries have good healthcare in major cities. Earthquake preparedness is important in Istanbul.
East Asia
General Safety
Tokyo and Seoul are among the safest cities in the world. Crime rates are extremely low. The main risks are natural disasters (earthquakes, typhoons) and air quality (Seoul).
Scam Awareness
Very few scams compared to other regions. Occasional nightlife-related overcharging in entertainment districts. Most people are honest and helpful.
Health & Precautions
Tap water is safe in both cities. Air quality can be poor in Seoul (fine dust). Earthquake preparedness is important in Tokyo. Healthcare is excellent but can be expensive without insurance.
South Asia
General Safety
India requires more cultural awareness and street smarts. Women should take extra precautions. Goa is safer than most Indian cities but still requires common sense, especially around beach parties.
Scam Awareness
Overcharging is common — negotiate everything. No ride-hailing in Goa specifically. Drink spiking is a real concern at parties. Trust your instincts and don't feel obligated to be polite.
Health & Precautions
Never drink tap water or eat raw vegetables washed in tap water. Carry anti-diarrheal medicine. Mosquito-borne diseases are a risk year-round. Medical tourism is good in cities but emergency care varies.
Africa
General Safety
Cape Town is an incredible destination but requires more security awareness than most nomad cities. Stick to safe neighborhoods, use Uber, and don't walk alone at night with valuables.
Scam Awareness
Distraction theft and smash-and-grab are the main concerns. Keep valuables hidden in vehicles. Don't walk with expensive gear visible. Hire local guides for excursions.
Health & Precautions
Tap water is safe in Cape Town. Sunburn is severe at southern latitudes — use SPF 50+. No malaria risk in Cape Town but exists in other South African regions.
